The first CoSN Webcast for 2008-2009, Julie Evans, CEO-Project Tomorrow, presents the Speak Up 2007 findings, moderated by Karen Greenwood Henke. Speak Up 2007 revealed a growing “digital disconnectâ€? between students and their teachers and parents about the role of technology for learning, and how well schools are preparing students for the jobs of the future. Students continue to be on the leading edge in terms of adopting, modifying and re-using digital content and technology tools to enrich both their personal and educational lives. The students in many ways are far ahead of their teachers and parents not only in the sophistication of their technology use, but in the adoption of emerging technologies for learning purposes. Read the follow-up article by Maya Pradu from eSchool News: “‘Digital Disconnect’ Divides kids, educators.”

Leveraging Banned Technologies To Create Ubiquitous Learning Environments
Anything, anyplace, anywhere access is becoming the norm. Yet, how should schools deal with the inevitable ubiquitous access by students? Can we continue to deny students and facility the ability to use their devices on the school network? Do district chief technology officers (CTOs) need to re-think policies that prohibit certain technologies from the school campus? Join in this thought-provoking CTO Forum, cosponsored by the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) and NSBAs Technology Leadership Network.
Register to attend.
I was recently honored by the National School Boards Association on their “20 to Watch” list of emerging education technology leaders. If you plan to attend the Technology + Learning conference in Seattle. Dr. Kari Stubbs, among the 2007 20 to Watch, leads a discussion about the future of technology in education based on a survey of this year’s 20. I plan to attend and share my thoughts in 1 or 2 minutes. Join us!
